It is recorded in Record of Yuzhong Commerce and Trade that Qunlin Market’s former site was exclusively used as a market for domestic industrial goods for daily use. The owner of the market was surnamed Chen. At the beginning of 1940s, the market was bombed by the Japanese bombers for which the owner went bankrupt. Kang Xingru, president of Meifeng Bank, purchased the ruins and funded in the construction of a new tower which was completed at the end of that year. The new tower was named Qionglin Building and inscribed as Qionglin Market by Yu Rouren, director of Supervisory Institute of Kuo Min Tang (KMT) . It was officially put into operation in early 1948. At the time, the business involved services, department stores, commission, watches, cultural products, medicine, candies, photo shops and others.  There were more than 60 merchants and 45 rental stores. The brand names with a certain size and influence include Jiulong, Lijun, Jinmei, Jinfeng and others. Since 1959, Qionglin Market became state-owned and it was inscribed as Qunlin Market (a name being used to this date) by Ren Baige, the mayor of Chongqing back then. By adopting a uniform operation system, the partitions among all the stores of all sizes inside the market were removed, leaving an integrated space through all stores. Three operation divisions were set up, namely apparel, department store and commission. All the highly-skilled tailors citywide gathered here. During the period of Institutional Revolution, its name was changed to The Market for Industry, Agriculture and Army. Over the course of decades, Qunlin Market walked through the age of planned economy and arrived at market-oriented economy. The bits of its history were engraved in people’s mind.
